when is a neonate likely to be admitted to the nicu?

The earlier in pregnancy a baby is born, the more likely he or she will require special care in their early days. A pre-mature baby (born before 37 weeks, but after 24 weeks of gestation) is more likely to need the services of an NICU and would need to stay in the hospital longer than most full-term babies.

Neonates that have had a stressful birth during delivery or show signs of a health issue in the first few days of life are also most likely admitted for observation in the NICU to assess a proper regiment of medical care.

To enhance care for your precious little one in the NICU, as soon as your neonate is strong and able enough, we encourage parents to participate in providing comfort care for the neonate. Our staff will help you learn how to care for the unique needs of your baby and assist you with kangaroo care, breastfeeding, nappy changing, etc., in the NICU's annexe.
